An Introduction to Yoga
The history of yoga is thought to be as old as civilization. The prehistoric roots and its gentle evolution and development are testimony to this fact. Traditional yoga gleaned from Indian asceticism to combining in the cosmic one. Yoga history might be traced in the Upanishads, Vedas and even in Brahmanas.
The word yoga is usually translated as "union" or a technique of discipline from the Sanskrit word "yuj" ( to yoke or bind ). A male expert is referred to as a yogi, a female expert, a yogini. The Postures ....
Brahmanism goes back to containing holy scriptures called "the Vedas". These scriptures contained instructions and incantations. It was in the oldest text "Rg-Veda" from the scriptures the word Yoga first appeared, this was almost 5000 years back. The 4th text called "Atharva-Veda" contains principally spells for spellbinding rites and health cures lots of which use medical plants. This text provided the typical person with the spells and incantations to be used in their day to day life and this practice of "Veda" can still be seen in the roads of India today. The Bhagavad-Gita, another traditional work on religious life describes itself as a yoga dissertation, though it makes use of the word Yoga as a non secular means. It was from this literature that Patanjali's "eight limbs of yoga" were developed.
Yoga Sutra's are basically involved with developing the "nature of the mind" and I'll explain more of this in the following section.
The Breadth ....
The vratyas, a bunch of fertility monks who worshipped Rudra, god of the wind would try to imitate the sound of the wind thru their singing. They revealed that they could produce the sound thru the control over their breath and thru this practice of breath control was formed "Pranayama". Pranayama is the practice of breath control in yoga.
The Trails ....
The Upanishads, which are the holy revelations of traditional Hinduism developed the 2 disciplines of karma yoga, the trail of action and jnana yoga, the trail of information.
The trails were designed to help the scholar liberate from suffering and finally gain enlightenment. The teaching from the Upanishads differed from that of the Vedas. The Vedas requested external offerings to the gods to have an abounding, content life. The Upanishads thru the practice of Karma yoga targeted on the internal sacrifice of the ego to liberate from suffering. Rather than the sacrifice of crops and animals ( external ) it was actually the sacrifice of the inner ego that would become the basic philosophy, so yoga came to be known as the trail of renunciation.
Yoga shares some traits also with Buddhism that may be traced back thru history. In the 6th century B.C, Buddhism also stresses the signification of Meditation and the practice of physical postures. Siddharta Gautama was the 1st Buddhist to literally study Yoga.
Modern yoga and its history-
The Chicago summit and the famous lecture of Swami Vivekananda changed into a turning point with the advent of Yoga to the Western world. So numerous yoga colleges appeared and more folk learned this yogic method of exercise.
Yoga today in modern world-
Yoga has gained enormous acceptance in recent times. Yoga has changed into a health movement. The westerner's perspectives and spirituality has changed a lot. Yoga's has changed into a compulsory fitness regimen. Yoga has developed into more modern form like power yoga or Zen yoga.
